What is cognitive offloading?
It is using external tools to perform mental work the learner would otherwise do — calculating, drafting, analyzing. Calculators offloaded arithmetic for decades; generative AI offloads entire arguments, code solutions, and literature summaries.
Offloading is not always harmful. The question is whether the student still undergoes the struggle required for durable learning — what educators call productive struggle.
How does AI make deskilling worse?
When AI produces near-finished work instantly, students can pass assignments without building mental models. Assessment that rewards only the final product makes this invisible until skills atrophy in writing, coding, and critical analysis.
